The period between October half term and Christmas is always a quiet one for us so we take the opportunity to have a holiday ourselves. After a very busy season we thought we deserved to close for a full month so that’s what we did.
Long haul seems out of the question at the moment so we decided to try Tenerife purely on a weather basis. I’ve always avoided the Canary Islands – thought it was just high rise hotels and English pubs – but I couldn’t be more wrong. We toured the whole island, avoiding the big Playas, and discovered lush green beauty, gorgeous towns, friendly people, stunning beaches and mountains, incredible walks and the food oh my god. Fresh fish and seafood platters 20 euros for 2 (would be £80 in the UK) and fragrant local wines. So that’s going to become a regular.
Another annual trip is a few days in Ireland with friends. This year Galway city. Again a wonderful Christmassy break with brisk walks and plenty of great grub. But really Ireland is all about the pubs. I’m not a great lover of sitting in pubs all day…except in Ireland where they just get everything spot on. Fires and candles are lit, fairy lights and soft lamps glow. The staff are incredible and really care about the food and drinks they serve. We had to show covid passes and wear masks when walking about but it was all done with minimum fuss. The best thing about Irish pubs has got to be the live music. It is always top quality entertainment. No dancing allowed this year but we still enjoyed great craic with the Irish people and students of Galway.
Finally another annual trip south for our son’s birthday. A great few days with family and dogs in London and Surrey and exploring a few new areas as well. Paul and I always start by doing a long walk along the south bank and stopping for drinks overlooking the Thames. What a city.
So that’s it for a while. Hope you all have a great Christmas and 2022 and find time to visit us. Feliz Navidad glampers.
