If you enjoy visiting gardens there are many to choose from in this area. We can recommend Burton Agnes and Sledmere; both have beautiful gardens and offer guided tours. Scampston Walled Garden is a stunningly beautiful contemporary garden, designed by the renowned Dutch plantsman, Piet Oudolf.
Castle Howard is described by Lonely Planet as ‘One of the World’s Top Ten Greatest Mansions and Grand Houses’ and has sublime gardens to match. Also home to the glorious Yorkshire Arboretum and only a few miles from another favourite, Yorkshire Lavender.
However, we really enjoy visiting some of the smaller, private gardens.
Wold Top Brewery is based at Hunmanby Grange Farm, a couple of miles away from us. As well as enjoying their delicious cask ales we recently visited their beautiful garden, opened annually under the National Garden Scheme. It has featured in many gardening magazines and on Gardeners’ World, exploring the challenges of gardening in such an exposed site. For more information regarding opening hours check out the Wold Top Brewery website.
However, the unmissable one for garden lovers is Jackson’s Wold Garden. Alan Titchmarsh wrote of this 3 acre garden in the Daily Express:
“Jackson’s Wold in Sherburn, North Yorkshire is a sight to behold. It not only has the most stunning formal gardens filled with beautiful blooms, it also commands the most breathtaking views over the Yorkshire Wolds”.
It is open every Tuesday from 1.00pm until 5.00pm from 21st May until 30th July. It also has a nice rustic tearoom in the Chalk Barn. A really special place.
